The Water &
Routine Guide
Most potty training advice skips the most important part — water management and consistent timing. Here's exactly what works.
Daytime Hydration
Provide consistent access to water — but with structure.
- Offer water after waking, eating, and play
- Allow drinking, then remove after a few minutes
- Avoid unlimited sipping throughout the day
Scheduled Potty Breaks
Puppies need to go shortly after drinking — every time.
- Take out 10–20 minutes after water
- Always go after meals and play
- Every 1–2 hours depending on age
Evening Routine
Set your puppy up for a successful night.
- Remove water 2–3 hours before bedtime
- Final potty trip right before crating
- Keep evenings calm and low stimulation
Bladder Development
Your puppy is still physically learning control.
- Under 4 months = very limited bladder control
- Age in months ≈ hours they can hold it
- Accidents are normal — patterns matter
